A High Academic Standard
Our core belief at Maaqtusiis Secondary School is that all students can learn to high levels. To us that means that all students expected to live independently after high school require a high school diploma. The staff and administration at MSS take that very seriously, and we work very hard to make that core belief a reality. 80-90% of our students graduate with a Dogwood Diploma. This is something we are very proud of. We are now focusing on supporting our students as they make the transition from high school to post-secondary education and meaningful employment. We have been working to increase the level of academic rigor for our students, as well as to provide opportunities for students to experience and excel in the trades and other employment areas.
The students, and many of our staff, are community members, and are deeply rooted in their ancient and resilient Ahousaht culture. Our students must walk in two worlds. The students of MSS are the future of their community, and their success is the community’s success. Not only does Ahousaht benefit, but Canadian society will benefit greatly when our students not only graduate with a Dogwood Diploma, but also leave school and enter the world as proud, culturally connected, and Nuu-chah-nulth speaking citizens and community members.
Our school reflects two of the most important features of Ahousaht: family and community. He-shook ish Tsawalk means we are all connected, and our school and community are made great by both. We care for each other as family and community in ways many schools could only dream of.
It is with great pride that the staff of MSS serve the loveable, strong, and capable students of Ahousaht.
